What is different in the canton of Obwalden?
On 25 September, Obwalden celebrates Brother Klaus (St. Nicholas of Flüe), a patron saint of Switzerland, as a high cantonal holiday. Christmas Eve, Berchtold's Day, Easter Monday, Whit Monday and St. Stephen's Day are customarily days off, but not public holidays.
What is behind “Feast of St. Nicholas of Flüe”?
Nicholas of Flüe (1417–1487), known as Brother Klaus, lived as a hermit in the Ranft near Sachseln from 1467. His advice helped to prevent a war among the Confederates at the Diet of Stans in 1481. He was canonised in 1947. He is a patron saint of Switzerland. His feast is celebrated in Switzerland on 25 September, and in his home canton of Obwalden it is a cantonal holiday.
