- 8. Immaculate Conception
What the three types mean
- Cantonal rest day
- Public rest day under cantonal law, e.g. shops are closed. Under employment law it is a working day.
- Customary day off
- Not a public holiday, but many employers give the day off. Your employment contract decides whether you are off.

Good to know
What is special about 2032?
- In 2032, only five public holidays fall on a weekday. Between 2024 and 2035, only 2026 and 2027 have as few.
- Falling on a weekend: Swiss National Day (Sun 1 Aug), Assumption Day (Sun 15 Aug), Christmas Day (Sat 25 Dec) and St. Stephen's Day (Sun 26 Dec). As a rule, there is no entitlement to a substitute day.
- In 2032, All Saints' Day (Mon 1 Nov) also gives you a long weekend without taking leave.
- Easter is early in 2032, on 28 March. Ascension Day (6 May) and Whitsun (16 May) are correspondingly early.
- The most worthwhile bridges: New Year's Day, Epiphany, Ascension Day, Corpus Christi and Saints Peter and Paul, each with 1 day of leave for 4 days off in a row. Calculate all bridge days in 2032
What is different in the canton of Ticino?
In Ticino, Good Friday is not a holiday, and in Valais it is not a public holiday either. Epiphany (6 January), on the other hand, is a public holiday here, the only canton where this is the case. St. Joseph's Day, 1 May, Whit Monday, Corpus Christi, Saints Peter and Paul (29 June) and the Immaculate Conception are cantonal rest days, but working days under employment law.
