What the three types mean
- Cantonal rest day
- Public rest day under cantonal law, e.g. shops are closed. Under employment law it is a working day.
- Customary day off
- Not a public holiday, but many employers give the day off. Your employment contract decides whether you are off.

Good to know
What is special about 2030?
- In 2030, nine public holidays fall on a weekday; between 2024 and 2035 it is 5 to 9, depending on the year.
- In 2030, no public holiday falls on a weekend.
- Easter is late in 2030, on 21 April. Ascension Day (30 May) and Whitsun (9 June) are correspondingly late.
- The most worthwhile bridge: Christmas Day, St. Stephen's Day, with 1 day of leave for 5 days off in a row. Calculate all bridge days in 2030
What is different in the canton of Thurgau?
In Thurgau, Berchtold's Day (2 January) is a public holiday. 1 May is a cantonal rest day, but a working day under employment law.
