What is different in the canton of Neuchâtel?
Neuchâtel celebrates the proclamation of the Republic on 1 March, and 1 May is also a public holiday here. When New Year's Day or Christmas Day falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is a day off. In Le Landeron, Corpus Christi is also a holiday, the only municipality in the canton where this is the case.
What is behind “Republic Day”?
Neuchâtel belonged to the King of Prussia from 1707, even after it became a Swiss canton in 1815. On 1 March 1848, around 1,400 armed republicans marched from La Chaux-de-Fonds via Valangin to Neuchâtel, where the Prussian governor surrendered. Prussia only finally renounced Neuchâtel in 1857. To this day, many people march from Le Locle and La Chaux-de-Fonds to Neuchâtel on 1 March.

What is behind “Federal Fast Monday”?
Federal Fast Monday follows the Federal Day of Thanksgiving, Repentance and Prayer. A first joint day of prayer was held on 8 September 1796; in 1832 the Diet set the third Sunday in September for all cantons. The Monday after is a day off in Vaud and Neuchâtel. In French-speaking Switzerland, people traditionally eat plum tart (gâteau aux pruneaux) on this weekend.
