What the three types mean
- Cantonal rest day
- Public rest day under cantonal law, e.g. shops are closed. Under employment law it is a working day.
- Customary day off
- Not a public holiday, but many employers give the day off. Your employment contract decides whether you are off.

What is different in the canton of Geneva?
Geneva has two public holidays that exist nowhere else: the Jeûne genevois (Geneva Fast) in September and the Restoration of the Republic on 31 December. St. Stephen's Day, on the other hand, is not a holiday. When 1 August falls on a Sunday, the Monday is partly a day off.
What is behind “Jeûne genevois”?
The Jeûne genevois (Geneva Fast) is an old day of penance and fasting. The first known one took place in early October 1567, when Protestants were being persecuted in Lyon. It is held on the Thursday after the first Sunday in September; Geneva never adopted the Federal Fast on the third Sunday in September. Traditionally, people eat plum tart (tarte aux pruneaux), which used to be the only meal of the day and could be baked the day before.

What is behind “Restoration of the Republic”?
Napoleon had annexed Geneva in 1798 and made it the capital of the French department of Léman. On 31 December 1813, the Genevans regained their territory. 31 December commemorates this Restoration of the Republic, among other things with cannon shots in the morning and a service in St. Peter's Cathedral.
